History of Nihon Buyō (日本舞踊) (Japanese Traditional Dance)
Nihon Buyō is a style of dance in Japan that has evolved over the past four hundred years, with roots in both the Nō ancient court dances and Kabuki, the popular dance-dramas. However, Kabuki has historically been performed only by male actors.
The dance style that evolved in the Kabuki plays starting from the early 17th century was called Kabuki Buyō. Kabuki Buyō later branched off to become its own art form. In Nihon Buyō, both men and women are allowed to perform.
In Japan today, there are many Ryū (dance styles). Many different schools of Nihon Buyō have evolved over the years, each with its own unique character and style of dance.
